Periodontics is a dentistry specialty that allows treating tooth support tissues: gums, bones, etc. Periodontitis is an inflammation of the tissues that may also affect a tooth’s bone support. This disease is caused by plaque (bacteria) and tartar (hardened dental plaque) that accumulates over time on the teeth and under the gumline, and destroys bone around the tooth. In the disease’s advanced stage, bone loss is such that teeth loosen and may be lost. It is in fact the main cause of tooth loss of in adults. The risk increases with age.

Procedure of Periodontics Treatment

Periodontal treatment aims to restore the health of damaged gums.

  • Tartar removal (removal of accumulated plaque and tartar on teeth)
  • Root planing (a technique used to smooth the root of the tooth
  • Curettage (cleaning under the gum to ensure the removal of the plaque and the inflamed tissues).

In more serious cases, surgery may be necessary to remove tartar lodged in pockets and bring the gums and bone back to a state that better lends itself to teeth brushing and the use of dental floss.
